28mm Successors WIP

Hi Guys, started working on 28mm miniatures for a change of pace. The figures are Foundry Ancients - Macedonians range. Foundry miniatures are great sculpts and some what easy/quick to paint up.... Also have 28mm Crusader Miniatures: 120 Macedonian figures plus 120 Greeks (Hoplites/light infantry) all these are awaiting to be primed etc...Thinking of placing lesser armor pikemen figures in the rear and heavy armor up front...The idea is to put a few Successor armies together and play using Basic Impetvs, Too the Strongest and maybe even Hail Caesar rules sets....or , dare I say it, *boring* DBA :oP

... umm..hmm.. how to base the figures?

Frontage 40mm x 40mm base with 4 figures (2 front x 2 rear) (Hail Caesar rules?)
or
Frontage 60mm x 40mm base with 6 figures (3 x 3) (2 stands make up one unit for Impetvs and TTS)
or
Frontage 30mm x 40mm (2 x 2) (4 stands to represent a unit for Commands and Colors Ancients?) This idea requires large hexes i.e. 5 inch hexes for units to fit in?....back to painting cheers!

  2. Gosh you've been busy, looking great,I didn't think it really mattered how you based for TTS? Three 40x40s would give you 120mm for impetus? What does everyone else use in your area? Lovely Pikemen anyway!

    1. Thanks Iain, yep thinking of using the 40mm x 40mm bases to mount the 28's figures. you're right 3 x 40/40mm bases will give me one unit of 120mm frontage for Impetvs or perhaps? 2 x 60/40mm bases (6 figures per base) something to think about during painting :o)

      cheers,

    1. The Foundry "lead" miniatures seem to be the best to buy for Ancients - There are awesome plastic construction kits/boxes to buy but I prefer metal minis..well...maybe get some plastic successor cavalry? :o)

      Thanks again!

    1. Thanks Carlo, I concur with you, Ancients or The Wars of the Diadochi (Successors) is a great period for us wargamers :o) with colorful armies and mass pike blocks on the table can be very appealing to the eye...

    1. Thanks Lawrence, The colours I'm using may not be historical but I do like the colours, similar to my 15mm Xyston miniatures listings here at my blog.... I still love your 15mm Xyston, Ancient Gauls and Spanish work/painting!

  9. Nice work so far, Phil. Having sold off my Foundry Macedonians, I had been eyeing the newer Victrix figs. However, contemplating painting up the linothorax again made me waver. :)

    1. Hey Dean! I think if you ever decide to start up Macedonians again using Victrix figures would be awesome! you are very talented and with your skills should have no problem putting together the Victrix minis and paint when ever you have a spare hour or two?... anyway..Thanks again!

      cheers,

  10. These fellows look very fine already. You have already made more progress on them than I have on the 300+ Macedonian figures I got for next to nothing a few years back - just one unit of 36 Phalangites completed to date!

60mm frontage used to be pretty standard for 25mm Ancients, and is what I have used from the 1970's on, but there's no reason 40mm couldn't work as well. Really a matter of choice re: aesthetics, cost, painting time, and maybe grid considerations for C&C. I use a 6" grid for TTS, which works fine with 60mm stands, but with 40 mm stands you could probably drop down to a 4"/100 cm grid.

    1. Thanks Peter, yeah thinking of basing the Macedonians/Successors on 40mm x 40mm this way should cover most rules sets out there to use/play i.e. "Hail Caesar" and thought about using 5 inch hexes for "Command Colors Ancients" and as you suggested 6 inch grids for "To The Strongest" works well too! Thanks for your suggestions much appreciated... long road for me to complete reasonable painted size units/forces for solo "experimental" games -

      cheers,
