28mm Renaissance Swiss Pikemen

Hi Guys, my apologies for lack of posting and for not visiting your blogs I have been busy and well...um.. here are my long over due 28mm Swiss Pike block(s) part of a large project I will be working on during the next few months. The miniatures are by Old Glory 25's - The Italian Wars range. Even though I have painted 25mm ACW figures last couple of years, It has been a long time since I last painted mass 25/28mm miniatures units I'm talking about the late 1970's early 80's painting 25/28mm Napoleonic's regiments... ah the memories....

anyway on to the figures

A bit of a slog  to prep, clean and paint these buggers ;o) The two units of Swiss Pike Blocks for French Service? :o) mounted on 40mm x 40mm stands. Each unit consists of 24 figures 8 Heavy Pikes, front rank, followed by 2nd and 3rd ranks of 16 Light Pikemen. These units may be used with any rules sets, or for my conversion ;o) of Commands and Colors - "Renaissance" board game engine/system ;o)

I like the Old Glory miniatures and I'm thinking about getting more packs i.e. Swiss, Italian and the Landshnechts (did I spell that correctly? ;o) to enlarge the pike blocks from 24 figures to 48 figure.....anyway... um.. I'm not to sure but I may have botched the Pikemen color schemes. Do these guys look historical painted to you guys? After looking at some of my photos some of these guys should have Swiss "crosses" on their shirts and legs?

  3. They look great! The Old Glory Italian Wars range is one of their best, especially the infantry and artillery. By the time of the Italian Wars, the earlier "cantonal color" patterns were fading (although I still did my own that way - makes it obvious, along with the cantonal banners (which these chaps need some of!), that they are SWISS. Be afraid... be very afraid!

Regardless, they should be less flamboyant than the Landsknechts (you were close, just remember the German word "Knecht", from whuich the English word "knight" derives, refers to a mercenary soldier, among other things).

I still have a long road to travel to get to your level of painting 28mm miniatures that includes many other great 28mm miniatures painters on my blog list, bloody marvelous how they paint their 28's.. anyway...next lot to paint up areTwo units of Landsknechts by Pro Gloria Miniatures painting these figures will really test me :o)

  7. Great work, great topic and very much a long spears.
Switzerland spear falangi dominated the battlefield for a long time.
These continues the Spanish infantry Tércio.
Until such time as the King Gustaf-II Cavalry (Swedish-Finn) broken this method.

  9. Don't sweat the small stuff on the crosses as they look great! The Old Glory Renaissance is actually some of their best stuff so in deciding on Old Glory and 28mm you picked a good period to come back in on. I wish I had the time and proper focus ability to jump fully into the Italian Wars as it's such a beautiful period and good gaming options as well.

Thanks Christopher for your kind words and support, yeah..I think I will give the small crosses the miss for now, I concur with you the Italian Wars in my opinion are one of many great periods to study, collect and paint miniatures/units. Old Glory have a huge range of fantastic figures most of them look great some not so great :)) and I am planning on buying more Renaissance bags, guns, cavalry and so on.... cheers Christopher..
