II/10 Camillan Roman

DBA 3.0

15mm Essex Miniatures

Army Composition: 1 x 3Cv (Gen) 1 x 3Cv, 4 x 4Sp, 2 x 4Bd, 2 x 3Ax or 4Ax, 2 x 2Ps
Only a brave wargamer/player would use this army to fight against Pyrrhus of Epirus 280 BC invasion of Italy! :o)

This Army follows the Tullian Roman (I/59) and is succeeded by the Polybian Roman (II/33), which covers the Punic Wars.

In Italy Rivals:
  • Samnites (II/13): Rome's most formidable Italian rival during the three Samnite Wars.
  • Etruscan League (I/57b): Ancient neighbors to the north, including the fall of the city of Veii in 396 BC
  • Latins (I/55d): Former allies who rebelled during the Latin War (340–338 BC).
  • Italiot Greeks (II/5g): The Greek colonies in Southern Italy (Magna Graecia), such as Tarentum.
  • Hill Tribes: Including the Aequi, Volsci, Umbrians (I/55e), and Apulians (II/8c)

Foreign Invaders:
  • Gauls (II/11): (the Senones) who famously sacked Rome in 390 BC under the chieftain Brennus.
  • Pyrrhic Epirus (II/27b): King Pyrrhus of Epirus arrived in Italy with war elephants in 280 BC and destroyed the Camillan system :o)

I replaced, as I did with the Polybian Triarii elements, the essex lead spears with real :o) steel wire for the Triarii spearmen the figures look a little better. I painted the Auxilia (Ax)  sheild patterns a bit too far or more to the point "over the top" most likely :o) non-historical sheilds! :o)

    1. Thanks Javier! The Essex are smooth easy quick painting of figures, I also do like painting Essex Ancients Cavalry than the Old Glory 15s cavalry... cheers!

  2. Beautiful work Phil. The auxilia shields seem like they could have been recruited from the Eastern parts of the empire and look spot on to me. I see there aren't any anti-elephant wagons in DBA, although I suppose they were only a small proportion of the army.

    1. Thanks Lawrence,
At the Battle of Asculum (279 BC), Romans deployed 300 specialized ox-drawn Anti-Elephant wagons. These featured revolving horizontal bars with iron-tipped tridents or spikes to wound the animals, and braziers containing fire-bearing grapnels to frighten them.

Phil Barker was questioned by DBA players years ago there should be one optional element of Anti-Elephant wagon for the Romans, but Phil Barker believes 200-300 ox-drawn Anti-Elephant wagons are not enough to justifiy having one element within the Roman Army... :o)

    2. To be fair, the DBMM army list ,ore or less makes the point you are making Phil in that the wagons are only available for a specific time period from Asculum onwards, which is probably fair enough. They are a bit anti-social anyway and I always cringe when I'm up against them.

    3. I know what you are saying Lawrence, in a way agree with your thoughts. yes Anti-elephant wagons - Reg WWg (X) @ 7AP (0-6elements) are available using DBM-DBMM army listings but not with DBA 2,2 or 3.0 I just think the Republican Roman player should have the opition having at least one Anti-elephant wagon but only allowed to be use vs. Pyrrhus of Epirus invasion of Italy, by the way Pyrrhos only had about 18-20 elephants! :o) under DBMM allowed to have up 2 Elephants and DBA one Indian war elephant! :o) oh well.. no big deal I guess? :o) cheers!
