15mm Republican Romans

DBA 2.2/3.0

15mm Essex Miniatures

Three painted DBA Republican Roman Armies

3.0/II/10 Camilian Romans
2.2/II/33 Polybian Romans
2.2/II/49 Marian Romans

Umm... to avoid "going insane" :oP while painting my 15mm Romans, I should have aimed for roughly about 100 to 200 figures. This number of figures would cover a standard "full" army for most popular ancient wargaming rulesets without reaching the level of a multi-year "megaproject" but!.. how much is too much painting and deploying your minis on the tabletop - not enough! :o))

    1. thanks! Roman army's size varied, generally ranging from 150,000 in the Republic to over 400,000–450,000 soldiers at its Imperial peak so how many 15mm Romans do I need to paint up before going insane? :o)

  2. They look great assembled together Phil. Really beautiful work. Do you have a favourite of the three? Marian seems most iconic, but I have a soft spot for the Polybian list.

    1. thanks Lawrence, a tough call or choice, but I think I’m with you—there is something uniquely satisfying about the Polybian army list for any wargame ancients rules sets used. If you appreciate the "citizen-soldier" era and the tactical depth of the three-line system, Polybians should be your choice...... I think? :o)

    1. Thanks Iain,
Connolly's illustrated work of the Roman army from the Greek-style phalanx to the manipulus system described by Polybius is very interesting reading....
