28mm Successors WIP 2

Basing anyone?

Playing around with ideas on how to base miniatures for Impetvs, Hail Caesar, To the Strongest and Commands & Colors...

16 Figures representing one Impetvs unit on 4 Stands x 60mm x 20mm (Frontage 12cm x 4cm or 6cm )

24 Figures representing one Impetvs unit. figures on 60mm x 20mm (6 Stands)  with three ranks this looks more of a pike block?

12 Figures representing one Basic Impetvs unit... figures on 60mm x 40mm (2 Stands)

Two Basic Impetvs units. figures on 40mm x 40mm (3 Stands each) This may be the better option to base my Successors minis it will also allow me to use the bases for Commands & Colors Ancients.

Commands & Colors Ancients 4 figure bases 40mm x 40mm..umm..hmm..notice some minor "gap" issues between the figures.... extra flocking/terrain features may help?

Playing around displaying units with basing options...

A long way to go to finish off this project! I also have Old Glory Miniatures - foot Archers, Slingers and Javelinmen to work on... Two figure 40mm x 40mm bases?

I need to find i.e. (Ptolemaic/Seleucid's) 28mm Successor Companions Cavalry, Heavy line Cavalry and Light Cavalry... question is which manufactures? :o) metal or plastic?..

...anyway back to cleaning/prep more pikemen and then on to painting!

  1. Well, all of your options look good. I like the 12 figs on 3x40x40 or 4x60x20 the best. Ok, I like the 16 fig block too! For Impetvs, shouldn’t the BMU depth be 60mm rather than 40mm?

    1. Yes the Impetvs Pike blocks may be 4cm deep or 6cm...
(12cm x 6cm) would be ideal for "visual appearance/effect" on the table top..but a bit pricey to buy the figures to put together en mass pike block units(formations)

  2. BI phalangites are large units so you can do 24 figures 6x4, I use 16 figure units 4x4 for Command & Colors Ancients and L'Art de la Guerre. Visually 8 x 4, 32 figures are the best, in my opinion.

    1. I'm thinking of 40mm x 40mm bases (16 figure units) I agree 8 x 4, 32 figures pikes would be awesome on the table - I'm not to sure if I have enough Successor minis for 32 figure pike blocks something to think about...

      Thanks again Cyrus

  3. Those pikemen look really good! Since I'm a dedicated Impetus player my choices are set and I have 12 figures per base but thinking about 14 might be better per base...

In your case 4 figures per base on a 40x40 always gives the most options to tailor unit sizes to whichever rule set your playing that day, but the 8 figures on a 60 x 20 gives more of a solid pike look. I suppose it's more of question of what you find more important that is impact look or flexibility.

    1. Thanks Christopher, yeah looks like 4 figures per 40mm x 40mm bases are the way to go in terms of basing the successors minis and able to play with most rules sets.

      cheers,

  4. I like your 24 figure pike block! The 40x 40 basing is the most sensible way to go, but...!

  5. Lovely work Phil. I'm with Iain, in that I prefer the 24-figure block - it just looks a bit denser to me, as I always imagine pike blocks to be.

    1. Thanks Lawrence!.. yep, 24 figure block looks (40x40 basing) impressive, and I will base the figures this way, it will cover most rules sets i.e. Impetvs, Command Colors Ancients and L'Art de la Guerre which better than DBA/DBM

      All the best!
      Cheers
